Tukol is a new medication used for suppressing cough, to relieve nasal congestion and as an expectorant. The manufacturer of the product is unknown but it probably carries the same name as the medication. It is known that it is made in the USA and is distributed by Genomma Lab USA Inc., Houston, TX 77027. Tukol doesn't seem to have its own official website too. It is sold through many retail stores which provide superficial information on it. So, it is unknown what other products are made by the company.
Tukol also includes the following uses. It is said to help loosen thin bronchial secretions and phlegm (mucus) to drain bronchial tubes. The product can be used to relieve cough due to bronchial irritation and minor throat, as well as to relieve nasal congestion. Usually, these symptoms occur when an individual has a cold. The main drawback of this product is that it brings only temporary relief from unpleasant symptoms but does not treat the condition.
Ingredients of Tukol - Does It Really Work? Is It a Scam?
The product contains a quite long list of ingredients which do not have scientific support. Thus, they may be harmful for your health and may cause a number of side effects. Besides, it is unknown whether these components are properly combined and whether they are used in the right dosages. They lack clinical evidence of being safe and effective.
Active ingredients of Tukol (in each 5 mL tsp) include Dextromethorphan HBr, USP 10 mg; Phenylephrine HCL, USP 5 mg; Guaifenesin, USP 100 mg. Inactive ingredients include anhydrous citric acid, glycerin, FD and C red no. 40, menthol, propylene glycol, natural and artificial flavor, purified water, sorbitol solution, sodium benzoate, sucralose. Each teaspoon contains 3 mg of sodium. The medication should be stored at 20-25 degrees C (68-77 degrees F). Do not keep it in the refrigerator. Let us have a closer look at the active ingredients of the product.
Dextromethorphan HBr is a medication used for temporary relief of coughs resulting from certain infections of air passages (common cold, sinusitis). Usually it is used for coughs without phlegm. There is a strict precaution not to use this medication for an ongoing cough from long-term breathing issues (emphysema, chronic bronchitis) or smoking. In any case, it is highly recommended to consult your doctor. Tukol contains dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant that decreases the feeling of the need to cough. This anti-cough product has not been shown to be effective or safe in children under 6 years of age. For this reason, avoid using this product for the treatment of cold symptoms in kids unless directed by your doctor.
Tukol does not cure the common cold and does not decrease the length of the illness. Besides, it may cause serious side effects. To reduce their risk, it is advised to carefully follow all label recommendations and dosage directions. Tukol is not used to make a user sleepy. Never take other cough-and-cold medications that have a similar principle of work or have the same ingredients. Ask your doctor about other ways to relieve cold and cough symptoms (drinking plenty of water, using saline nose drops or a humidifier).
Guaifenesin is another active ingredient of Tukol. It is a combination medication used to temporarily relieve chest congestion and coughing caused by flu, the common cold, bronchitis, sinusitis, or other breathing illnesses. This expectorant helps to thin mucus in the lungs improving the process of coughing up the mucus. Another component in the product, Codeine is a narcotic cough suppressant that influences a certain zone in the brain, decreasing the desire to cough. This medication is not usually used for ongoing coughs from smoking, asthma, other long-term breathing problems (e.g., emphysema), or for coughs with a lot of mucus, unless directed by your doctor.
Customer Reviews - Does It Have Any Side Effects?
The manufacturer of Tukol does not mention possible side effects or adverse reactions associated with the use of the product. It seems that the company tries to conceal possible dangers for the human health. In general, the medication may be very dangerous because it works by suppressing coughing centers in the human brain. Any suppressing of natural body reflexes can be harmful and even risky. Tukol is not a natural product, as it contains mainly chemical components. Thus, it can lead to certain adverse reactions.
Common side effects of Tukol include slight drowsiness, lightheadedness, nausea, dizziness, facial flushing, and vomiting. Rarely, some users may experience severe dizziness and drowsiness while using normal doses. If any of these effects worsen, talk to your doctor promptly. A very serious allergic reaction to Tukol is rare. However, you are advised to ask for immediate medical aid if you notice the following signs: itching, rash, swelling, trouble breathing, severe dizziness, etc. Some people may suffer from constipation when taking the medication.
Tell your doctor immediately if you have any serious side effects, such as hallucinations, serious mental changes, mood swings, irregular or fast heartbeat, trouble urinating. Never take more than six doses in a 24-hour period. This product is meant for adults only and is not intended for kids under 12 years of age. Adults are recommended to take two teaspoons every 4 hours.
Do not use Tukol if you take prescription monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (drugs for emotional or psychiatric conditions, depression, or Parkinson's disease). Avoid using this drug if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, thyroid disease, trouble urinating due to an enlarged prostate gland, diabetes, cough with too much phlegm mucus, chronic bronchitis or emphysema, chronic cough due to smoking or asthma. Let us have a look at some of real users' reviews of the product.
"Tukol does not work for me at all. I would not buy it again because it didn't relieve any of my cold or congestion symptoms. Besides, it made me nervous, sleepless and dizzy. Do not buy this product!"
"I bought Tukol in the pill form and it didn't even relieve my horrible cough that lasted me about two weeks. Now I am looking for another medication that would help me to feel good at least one day. I am still coughing. No difference observed."
"I started using Tukol when I had a cold. I purchased this drug online for my chest cough that really bothered me even at night. I started sleeping better but I have got a bad side effect: trouble urinating. I think I will have to stop using it."
Where To Buy Tukol?
The product is currently unavailable on Walgreens and GNC. Amazon sells this cough syrup (4 fl. Oz) for $8.34 ($2.09 / Fl Oz) and free shipping on orders over $49. Walmart offers the product at an even lower price - $5.97 plus free shipping on orders more than $50.
My Final Summary
I don't think that Tukol is a good solution for severe chest cough. As an expert I do not support the idea of suppressing cough because it may lead to even more serious health problems. The mucus should have its way out, otherwise you may develop a serious lung infection. The product has a lot of potential side effects. Although it is not very expensive, it does not seem to be effective for everyone. However, Tukol is available on many retail stores. I cannot recommend this drug to usage.
Many modern health specialists are sure that the problem can be perfectly solved by another product known as Curcumin 2000 and I completely agree with them because study many products of the kind. I recommend you reading my Curcumin 2000 review. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
